This piece takes place at the emotional conclusion of these character's arcs. They don't know what's going to happen tommorow, but they're letting go if the uncertainty that's been crushing them and taking a moment to breath, knowing they'll face it together. The piece incorporates the character's color schemes- both red and blue- desaturated in to calm, cool pinks and dark blues that turn to purple as they fade together, reflecting the calm middleground the characters have found between their previous harshly conflicting perspectives.
Under Pressure
November 2023 - Digital Illustration
Alone in a motel room, the crushing pressure of circumstance weighs down on the character. The low lighting and intense black and white add to the somber tone of the piece.
Guiding Hands
March 2023 - Ballpoint on Toned Paper
One character teachers another how to properly wrap his hands for a fight.
Fishy Self Portrait
March 2023 - Ballpoint on Toned Paper
An assignment for my freshman year drawing class, the challenge of this one was to incorporate the features of some sort of animal into a human portrait. I went with my favorite, an Anglerfish, having fun with the bioluminescence to create some funneffects with the lighting and eyes.
Aftermath
November 2023 - Digital Illustration
Another assignment, the mission here was to convey character and storytelling through a figure drawing and any props.
The character here, Ray - a frequent subject of this portfolio, and a character from my comic Eidolon: No Cost Too Great - is an underground prizefighter, but treats it as casually as any other minimum wage job. Here he recuperates after a fight.
Cracked Actors
March 2024 - Digital Illustration
An experiment in diagetic storytelling, these two images in sequence show the character on the bottom left's in-universe phone Lock Screen at two different points in time, foreshadowing his eventual end.
Mendez Family Portrait
February 2024 - Acrylic on Canvas Board
A much more realistic portrait of two Eidolon characters, the challenge of this one was figuring out what the fictional cartoon characters would look like if they had realistic features. This was accomplished by collecting a wide variety of reference images of different people, and combining and mixing and matching features in a variety of practice sketches until I had something that felt right.
World's Worst Sweet 16
September 2023 - Digital Illustration
The character on the right is fated to die at midnight on the character on the left's 16th birthday. They both know this, and are waiting it out together.
The Pestilence Page #143
May 2023 - Digital Illustration
One of the later pages of my first comic project, this scene involved me experimenting with dramatic lighting in a way that I'm still quite happy with. Lighting and shading, as important as they can be for storytelling, are often hard to incorporate into comic work because of how fast and streamlined production tends to be, so up until this point in this comic I had mostly been ignoring it. But after doing this set of pages I added it to my regular roster of tools and included it on almost all of the subsequent Pestilence pages and most Eidolon pages.
I am also quite fond of the body language in this page, and am still rather proud of it.
Eidolon: No Cost Too Great Page #25-#26
March 2023 - Digital Illustration
Here, a character feels something awakening from deep inside of them- and decides firmly to ignore it.
One of only a few Eidolon sequences that receives full color, I am extremely proud of the expressions and body language here and how it establishes the character's bad attitude as well as setting up their primary character conflict.
Emie Walters Reference Sheet
June 2024 - Digital Illustration
Emie is a burnt-out mechanic and former celebrity mech pilot in an anime inspired Kaijus vs. Mechas setting. she rarely takes off her piloting suit- but also rarely wears it all the way, choosing to keep it half-on and tied around her waist like a jumpsuit. If she's wearing the full suit you know you're in trouble.
The underwear option is included here to show off scars from her time as the best-known mech pilot in the world, scars her normal outfit keep deliberately hidden.
Ray Mendez Reference Sheet
November 2023 - Digital Illustration
More Ray. From left to right; his fighting outfit; dramatic and anime inspired as he plays up his heel persona, casual clothes; more comfortable but just as ridiculous, maintaining his color schemed accessories because he's sort of a dweeb, his training outfit which is most casual of all , and finally a swimsuit for the beach.
Jimmy Burgers
October 2023 - Digital Illustration
A commission of someone's tabletop character, the challenge here was consolidating their reference images that came from miscellaneous dress-up games and image makers into a single, coherent character design. I'm quite happy with the composition and color design as well.
Post-Workout Shower
April 2024 - Acrylic on Paper
Another figure drawing assignment, I used a fun cheesy pin-up sort of concept as an excuse to focus in on practicing anatomy.
The reference was of a photo of Hugh Jackman at the beach, to which I then had to photoshop in the reflected light from all of the blue in the locker room, as well as change the color of the shadows, as none of that blue was in the original reference.
The majority od the work was slowly building up layers of watered-down paint on blues and oranges to create the gradual variations in tone. Details like the body hair, darkened eyebrows and more definition to the scars were then added with watercolor pencils.
Sage
May 2024 - Digital Illustration
This was my first polished drawing of this character, and therefore much of the focus was on establishing their personality and vibe through body langauge and color choices. It was proceeded by many, many messy practice sketches of me figuring out their features, expressions, and styl to produce this final product.
"Kaiju Blue" Color Project
August 2024 - Adobe Indesign & Photoshop
An assignment for my Typography and Graphic Design class, the mission here was to create a cover and editorial spread for a magazine of our choosing.
I did a diagetic magazine taking place within the world of the Pacific Rim film franchise, an informational magazine focusing on the environmental impacts of the Mechas and Kanjis seen in the film.
I created the imagery in Adobe Photoshop, combining free-to-use stock images and assets from the movie. theology was created in Adobe Illustrator. the final layout was assembled in Adobe Indesign and the article was filled with placeholder text.
It is worth noting that I do not own Pacific Rim or any of the film assets used.
Fight Club
October 2023 - Pen on Paper, Digital
Practice at action poses with big, cheesy comic-book style action lines and sound effects, this was drawn in my sketchbook with a ballpoint pen, and lined over with a thin felt tip marker. It was then imported into my drawing app and all color was applied digitally.
